Salvation Series I - Part 6 - The Death, Burial and Resurrection of Jesus Christ

When Jesus died, His soul went to hell to suffer for 3 days and 3 nights, his body was however taken from the cross and laid in the tomb.
Act 2:22-31
22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death:because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
This is a great mystery. When Jesus went to hell, God promised not to leave his soul there, and that his body would not see corruption. It was the same body that was laid in the tomb that Jesus would be resurrected in. While His body was laid in the tomb his soul was being tormented in hell. It was the great intent of God that he would suffer for 3 days and nights, even as Jonah was in the belly of the whale, so would Jesus be in the depths of the earth. Also consider this, Lazarus' body began to stink after 4 days, which is a sign that his flesh began to decay (corruption). Jesus therefore could not stay in hell for longer than 3 days in order for his body not to decay.
After 3 days and nights the transgression of sin was ended and the penalty for sin was paid for. However let us examine some things. When Jesus was on the cross, He had a body of sin, God was in the body, and Jesus' soul was in God (see Fig 5). However when He died, His body stayed on the cross, His soul went to hell and God returned to heaven.

The image above gives us a visual of what happened when Jesus died. Jesus said, into thy hands I commend my spirit:and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. The Holy Ghost went up to heaven, while His soul went down to suffer on our behalf. However the body on the cross was still a body of sin and it was that body that was laid in the tomb.
Rom 14:9
For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.
HE DIED - (Both the soul and body of Jesus died)
Jesus died on the cross and his soul went to hell and the Holy Spirit returned to heaven. His body was placed in the tomb.
HE ROSE - (Jesus' soul)
After 3 days and nights, God went to hell and rescued His son. While Jesus' soul was in hell, God went down to hell, and placed Jesus' soul in Himself. Jesus was risen from the dead at this point because His soul was placed in a Spirit of Life.
At this point the meaning of the Holy Ghost is revealed. A ghost is the spirit of a person that lives on after death. Jesus died, however when his soul was risen from the dead by God, He became the Holy Ghost. The Spirit of God had caused Jesus' soul to live on, Jesus is therefore now a Ghost, the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is the Spirit of God with the risen soul of Christ in it.
HE REVIVED - (Jesus' body)
The Holy Ghost then went to the tomb and raised the dead body from the dead. The dead body was at that point revived. This means the body was alive before, then it died, then after 3 days it was revived by the Holy Ghost.
Jesus died, rose and revived.
Let us not forget that the body that laid in the tomb was a sinful one. It was still atoned with the sins of the world, so in order for the Holy Ghost to enter it, it had to be first sanctified. It was overshadowed even as Mary's was.
Luk 5:37-38
37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.
The Holy Ghost is the new wine that was to be placed in the bottle of the body. The body had to therefore be made new first that the Holy Ghost could enter.
Jesus' body was revived, holy and righteous, even as it was before the sins of the world were placed upon it. He was now a holy sacrifice ready to be presented to the Father.
Jn 20:16-17
16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father:but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
I want to take this time out to emphasize the point that Jesus was revived in the same body that was in the tomb. It was a physical body. He was risen the Son of God but still the Son of man.

33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.
36 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself:handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?
He was risen a man with flesh and blood, and even had the ability to eat.
In our next part we will delve more into the process of sanctification which God did to the body of Jesus Christ, and not only His but ours also.
